A group of community boaters has joined Sail Newport to organize a Newport Harbor Memorial Boat Parade for Sunday, June 6, starting at 5:30 p.m. The parade will pay tribute to members of the community who passed away in 2020 and 2021.

Brad Read, Sail Newport’s executive director was inspired to create the memorial boat parade because of the loss of opportunities to gather due to pandemic restrictions.

“We’ve lost so many people over the past year who had an enormous impact on all aspects of our community, the boat parade will be a meaningful tribute and an opportunity for all of us to spend time together to remember our loved colleagues, friends and family members,” says Brad Read, Sail Newport executive director.

Spectators:
Watch: The Newport Memorial Boat parade can be viewed from points surrounding the waterfront in Newport Harbor. Spectators are reminded to adhere to state and city guidelines for COVID safety.

The boat parade will navigate clockwise around Newport Harbor and will start at Goat Island then proceed past the Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard,  State Pier 9, Newport Yacht Club, The Newport Harbormaster’s Office, Bowen’s and Bannister’s wharves, Hammetts Wharf,  IYRS, Casey’s Marina, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club,  Sail Newport and end at Fort Adams State Park.

Women’s Fund of Rhode Island (WFRI), a leader in the movement to improve policies that impact women and girls in Rhode Island, today announced the organization will be holding a fundraising launch event: 100 Men for Gender Equity. 

The kickoff event features guest speaker, Ted Bunch, co-founder of A Call to Men. Mr. Bunch is an author, educator, activist, and lecturer working to end all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls. He has been internationally recognized for his efforts to prevent violence against women while promoting healthy, respectful manhood.

Women need male allies more than ever. In the past year, hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost and the majority of those belonged to women. Women are leaving the workforce in record numbers AND women are picking up extra schooling, childcare, and home labor duties in addition to working full-time. How can men support their colleagues, partners, family, and children? Find out how by participating in our 100 Men for Gender Equity campaign kickoff and leave with actions you can take.

The 100 Men for Gender Equity campaign goal is to recruit 100 men raising $100 each for a total of $10,000 towards achieving gender equity through systemic change. 

The Ocean State Waves is a member of the New England College Baseball League, with players coming from top collegiate programs throughout the USA. Playing at Old Mountain Field provides young players with an opportunity to play summer ball, enhancing their skills and provides the families of South County a place to strengthen community and neighborhood ties.  It’s quality baseball at an affordable price. Raised in a large Irish-Catholic family in Philadelphia at a time when kids hid under their desks in atomic war drills, Chris’s life etched a pattern: take a leap, live an adventure, then learn what it means. As a young Peace Corps graduate, Chris moved to DC and began knocking on doors on Capitol Hill. With dreams of becoming what Ted Sorensen had been for Jack Kennedy, Chris landed as a staffer to Utah Senator Frank Moss, where his eyes were opened to the game of big-league politics.
In the 1970s, Matthews mounted a campaign for Congress as a Democratic maverick running against Philadelphia’s old political machine. He didn’t win the most votes, but his grit put him on the path to a top job in the White House. As a speechwriter for President Carter, Matthews witnessed the triumphs and tragedies of that administration; from the diplomatic brilliance of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty to the disaster of the Iran hostage crisis. After Carter’s defeat, Chris became chief of staff to legendary Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill, a perch that gave him an on-the-job PhD in American politics during the Reagan years.
Chris then leapt to the other side of the political matrix as a columnist and reporter. For the San Francisco Examiner, he covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first all-races election in South Africa, the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland, and every American presidency from Reagan to George W. Bush. Chris would go on to pioneer cable news with a fast-paced, no-nonsense television program. His show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, would become a political institution for twenty years.
As Chris charts his political odyssey, he paints an energetic picture of a nation searching for its soul. He reflects with grace and wisdom, showcasing the grand arc of the American story through one life dedicated to its politics.
Chris Matthews is a visiting professor at Fulbright University, Vietnam. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit; Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero; Tip and the Gipper: When Politics Worked; Kennedy & Nixon; and Hardball. For twenty years he anchored Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC.

The Providence Preservation Society (PPS) is delighted to announce our special Festival of Gardens taking place on June 12-13 and presented in partnership with The Garden Conservancy. Guests will enjoy exclusive access to a selection of private gardens at historic homes, a community garden that celebrates the city’s diversity, and a garden stewarded by PPS since the 1930s.

Located in four city neighborhoods from the East Side to Elmwood, the eight featured gardens will exhibit a variety of plantings and contemporary interpretations of historic garden design. Six of the featured properties are private residential gardens located at historic houses. Guests will experience flowering perennials surrounding a 21st century garden folly, a whimsical structure popular in 18th century English and French landscape design; a 1970s interpretation of an 18th century boxwood parterre garden, an ornamental form featuring geometric designs that originated in 15th century France; and midcentury Modern outdoor sculpture by internationally recognized artists with RISD connections. Green-thumbed homeowners have transformed their city backyards into urban sanctuaries by using water features, pergolas, and courtyards to accent rhododendrons, mossy vignettes, and old and notable trees. Not just beautiful, many of the gardens are also functional – vegetable beds, fruit trees, herbs, a hops trellis, and beehives await tour attendees. Guests are also invited to tour a community garden established in the 1980s and farmed by local families and neighborhood organizations using organic practices to raise traditional crops from around the world; rooted in community, free produce is available to neighbors experiencing food insecurity. The tour also features the Colonial Revival garden at the 1772 Shakespeare’s Head Building, one of PPS’s historic properties on Meeting Street.

Self-guided garden tours will take place on Saturday, June 12. Guided private garden tours hosted by The Garden Conservancy will take place on Sunday, June 13.

Since 1965, the Gaspee Days Committee has continued its efforts to preserve, promote, and share Rhode Island’s revolutionary history with the community – and there’s no better way to do that than by celebrating over 50 years of the Gaspee Days Parade. Combining colonial groups from all over with our modern and vibrant community, this is truly a show not to miss! Each year, friends and neighbors crowd along a two-mile stretch of Narragansett Parkway anxiously awaiting the march of the parade. Be it the fife and drums corps, the fire trucks, or the Shriners in their miniature cars, everyone has a favorite to look forward to!

As our last blow in the celebration of Gaspee Days, we reenact the event that started it all with a symbolic burning of the ship that sparked the American Revolution – come celebrate it with us! Starts at 1:00pm after the parade.
