How to Make a Wooden Sled
What You Need:
1 in. x 6 in. x 8 ft. wooden plank
1 in. x 4 in. x 8 ft. wooden plank
T-square
Pencil
Miter Saw
Band Saw
Belt Sander
Wood Stain or Paint
Wood glue
Brad nail gun
1. Sketch Out the Wooden Sled Pieces
Before even touching a single tool, sketch out the vintage sled pieces on the wooden planks. These serve as the patterns when it’s time to cut the shapes down.
Here are the shapes you need to cut out:
Runners, or the ski-looking things that go against the snow
Slats for the seating
Supports that hold the runners and the seating slats together
A rack for the steering rope
Some spacers to guide the supports where they should be
Tip: You can use any circular objects like tape rolls, paint cans, or even small buckets to cleanly draw the curved pieces of your template.
2. Cut Down the Planks
Now that you’ve sketched out the templates, cut down the 1 x 4 plank into smaller sections with the miter saw. After that, cut down the wood pieces sketched on the 1 x 6 plank with a band saw.
3. Sand and Smoothen the Wood Pieces
With your shapes now cut down to size, run them over the belt sander to smooth out the edges. This not only gives your wooden sled a finished look but also removes splintering so you don’t hurt yourself.

4. Stain the Wooden Sled Pieces
Next, add some wood stain to all your wooden sled pieces to create a more rustic look. For a more colorful touch, you can choose to paint them instead.
5. Assemble Your Wooden Sled
Once the paint or wood stain’s completely dry, you can start assembling the wooden sled.
Lay the runners first, then slot in the supports for the seating.
Once you have placed the supports, fit in the spacers between the supports.
After completing the layout for the bottom half, bind the pieces together with some wood glue and some brad nails.
Next, attach the seating slats with some brad nails. Make sure to leave a small gap between the slats.
Attach the steering rack and drill a hole on both sides of the rack for the rope
6. Add the Finishing Touches
For the final pieces, cut off a strip of metal that’s as wide as the gap between the steering piece and the longest wooden slat and give it a coat of black spray paint. Once the paint has completely dried, screw it on the gap between the steering piece and the wooden slat.
Thread the rope on to the steering piece and tie both ends together.
Your finished project should look like this:
