Dear Reader,
Boo! Surfnetkids has so many Halloween resources, I’m not going to include them all here, but you can find my Halloween list here: Halloween Resources.
On a more personal note, last week my kids and I got some very special news: we were granted Austrian citizenship. Here’s the short story:
My mother was born in Vienna, Austria in 1929. On March 12th, 1938, Hitler invaded Austria, and it was annexed into Nazi Germany. Later that year, my mother and grandparents escaped the Nazis and sailed to New York. As part of sec 58c of the recently passed Austrian Nationality Act, direct descendants of those persecuted by the Third Reich are now eligible to regain Austrian citizenship. While it has taken over 80 years, we appreciate the small step the Austrian government has taken in trying to right past wrongs.
See ya on the Net,
Barbara J. Feldman

It’s Halloween, and your treat bag is full of trick-or-treat candy. If you have 8 Snickers bars, and three times as many Tootsie Rolls, how many more Tootsie Rolls do you have than Snickers bars? Here are some ideas for mixing a little math fun into everyone’s favorite holiday, Halloween!
Education.com: Math Halloween
“Halloween worksheets are an excellent tool to help you and your kids get into the spooky spirit! These Halloween worksheets for kids have been made by experts in the education field, and include both educational and purely fun exercises.” These free math printables include addition, subtraction, word problems, counting, fractions, multiplication, patterns, and money. An outstanding collection, and is one of two picks of the week.
Math Drills: Halloween Math Worksheets
“Be careful of the monsters on the worksheets; they sometimes bite. Instead of labeling the Halloween math worksheets with letters, we’ve labeled them with scary words. If you happen to hear a noise when you click on one of the worksheets, we assure you, it is all in your head.” This fun collection also earned a pick of week because of their excellent assortment of worksheets, and the inclusion of geometry, probability and other middle-school level topics (along with counting, sorting and ordering for younger grades.)
Mathwire.com: Math Activity Themes: Pumpkin Math
“Fall is the season that students begin the search for their own ‘perfect pumpkin’ so these activities were created to help students develop mathematical concepts using a pumpkin theme.” For elementary grades, these activities include graphing, symmetry, a dice game, measuring, and other problem-solving challenges. In addition, there are links to pumpkin picture books that are excellent companions to the activities.

Quote of the Week
“When you have mastered numbers, you will in fact no longer be reading numbers, any more than you read words when reading books. You will be reading meanings.” ~~ W.E.B. Du Bois ~~ (February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, and author. If you would like to read more W.E.B. Du Bois quotes, click the link.
