Fillip and Jamie Horderly have made a career out of helping us sort our junk and get organized. Right now they are reconfiguring their business to help with virtual organizing. Projects to tackle now that we are based at home

The opportunities are endless right now! However, don't let this overwhelm you. The first and most important step of the process is to PRIORITIZE. It's really easy to be stuck at home and think about all the areas that you could be organizing and quickly fall into overwhelm, thus avoiding getting anything done. Prioritize what area you want to work on first and focus on that area until it's complete. If you find you could use some guidance, check out Horderly's virtual organizing at this time!

Tip: Don’t wing it and buy products, buy them consciously so that it will be sustainable. Measure and think about the products you really need before you buy.

Get the Kids to Help with the Organizing

Make getting organized and creating structure in your home a fun project with your kiddos! Turn it into a game or fun activity and have them help you put their new (very own) workspace together! Dust off that desk or table you have in storage and have them make a sign of their name to mark this space theirs! What we have found really fun and important for kids to help with is the sorting and labeling step of our Horderly 11 step process. For example, ask them to help you sort out the balls/baby dolls/cars/etc. in the pile of toys that you want to edit. Once you have everything sorted, edited and a proper home for everything - have them help you label each category! This will help them learn exactly where to find that specific item and where to put it back as well!

Throughout decluttering and setting up kids workspaces, it's not only important to teach them how to keep their space organized but how to properly recycle. We suggest referencing to Recycling Simplified who offers educational lessons, as games, for kids of all different ages on how to properly recycle.

Tip: After you've organized review the set up. Make sure the kids understand the "home" for everything they own.

Tips for creating workspaces for younger kids

Find a comfortable spot in your home with a comfortable surface and chair fit for your child. This doesn't have to be an actual "desk," as long as it's a functional surface. Make sure the lighting is good but also make sure it's not too distracting (like facing outside a window). This means keeping it free of clutter as well which is the #1 cause of distraction, so make sure a trashcan is nearby for trash to land without them having to get up. Create a proper home for anything that needs to live near the desk so that everything isn't landing on top of the desk - and teach your child this system or set it up with them so that they know exactly where to find something and where to put it back.

Make it their own! This should be their own special spot where it's their and only theirs. Clutter is one thing, but inspiration is another. Have a few items hanging or on the desk that can spark inspiration and imagination but keep this limited to only a few things and don't go overboard.
