Since our world is dynamic and changes rapidly, we cannot say for sure which professions will be in demand in five or ten years. According to “The Future of Jobs Report” by World Economic Forum, by 2025, 85 million jobs may be displaced by a shift in the division of labour between humans and machines. At the same time, 97 million new jobs may appear, and these roles should be more adapted to the emerging division of labour between humans, machines, and algorithms. Needless to say, all these trends create a highly uncertain outlook for the future job market.
Today’s children should therefore be ready to get re-skilled and up-skilled continuously throughout their lives, something that we are already beginning to see happen. Professional profiles will need to be updated many times during the career years.
An entrepreneurial mindset is something that will help children overcome life’s obstacles and constraints. So, why not teach kids entrepreneurship from an early age to help them get prepared for the “big” life?
An entrepreneur is always an innovator. These are the kind of people who think creatively, are ready to take risks, and, of course, inspire the people around them. Diving into entrepreneurship early will help children develop the competencies that will be useful in their professional lives and their personal ones. Even if a kid doesn’t choose to become self-employed, such a skill set will definitely help them to succeed, no matter which career path they choose to follow.
Skills taught through entrepreneurship
Let’s look at a few of the competencies and skills that children obtain through learning entrepreneurship at an early age.
Creative thinking
Being creative is essential for staying competitive, and here is why:
● Creativity helps us to see problems from different angles and gain new perspectives
● Creative entrepreneurs spot problems or market needs before most others would and can come up with brand-new ideas and concepts;
● Creativity allows us to consistently move forward as we need to stay competitive in a constantly changing environment.
Goal setting
The ability to set goals is an important skill to succeed in today’s world. Proper goal setting keeps you focused, organized, and motivated. Entrepreneurship goes hand-in-hand with goal setting. It is essential for business people to have a long-term vision and to break down big goals into smaller bitesize tasks to be completed.
In this sense, developing an entrepreneurial mindset is going to help kids significantly with lifelong S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting skills. The S.M.A.R.T. term was first mentioned by George T. Doran in November 1981, and allows us to stay focused on our goals.
Make goals clear and reachable:
· Specific (simple, sensible, significant).
· Measurable (meaningful, motivating).
· Achievable (agreed, attainable).
· Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
· Time-bound (time-based, time-limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive).
Planning and allocating resources efficiently
Although we live in an era of global opportunities, our resources are still limited for a variety of reasons. This is especially true about time.
It is important to teach children to rationally allocate their time and to be able to set priorities. Equally, kids need to learn to be recognized when they legitimately need a break and to not be afraid to take one. This is one more component of an entrepreneurial skillset.
Awareness
Another important skill to develop is awareness in decision-making. For example, what is a child actually choosing when they opt to shift their focus from their entrepreneurial creativity and goals to play with their friends. Being exposed to entrepreneurship early will greatly assist kids in understanding their own decisions — both in everyday situations and in more significant aspects of life.
