Reading is so great for your child’s development and every parent should encourage their child to read as much as possible. However, that’s easier said than done these days, especially with so many other distractions. A lot of kids would rather play video games or go online instead of reading, so you need to find ways to get them excited about it. This comes naturally to some kids, but most need a bit of a push. The good news is, there are some great tools you can use to encourage them to bury their head in a book. If your child is struggling to read, try these great gadgets.
Digital Libraries
Access to more books is important if you want your child to read more. You need to help them find something that interests them or they won’t be engaged with it. Digital libraries like Reading IQ from Age of Learning are perfect because they give you access to thousands of digital books. There are options for all different reading levels and you have lots of great educational books as well as fictional ones too. If you go through the library with your child and pick out books that they are likely to be interested in, it’s much easier to get them engaged with reading.
Digital Bookmarks
If you want your child to read more, you could try introducing a challenge element to it. Digital bookmarks are a great tool for this because they have a timer on them that counts the total time your child has spent reading. Setting them goals to read a certain amount every week or reach a certain number of hours as quickly as possible is a great way to encourage them. If they are reluctant to read and you are enforcing their reading time, you can use a countdown timer to make sure that they have done their assigned reading for the day. If you start offering small rewards for reaching reading milestones, you’ll soon find that they can’t put their book down.
Automatic Readers
Making the transition from reading with a parent to reading alone can be tricky for some kids. They still want the help of a parent but it’s important that they learn to read independently so they can develop their skills. Using an automatic reader is a great middle ground here. The Sparkup is one of the best ones out there because you can use it with any books that you already have at home. You can record yourself reading the book and then the automatic reader will read it as your child turns the pages. It uses visual technology and recognizes pages, so it knows what page your child is on and it follows the pace. As well as recording your own books, you can download pre-recorded stories and get the books to accompany them. This is a great way to help your child read on their own while also having a bit of help. It’s also brilliant for getting grandparents and other family members that live far away to record their own messages.
These gadgets are all excellent for helping to encourage your child to love reading.
